When I’m not photographing corporate business headshots here in Los Angeles, I’m usually shooting a mix of editorial portraits, sports, and feature assignments, print advertising, as well as corporate and celebrity events. Last Saturday, I photographed the 50th Anniversary of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at Benefit Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. "The X Factor" Press Conference was held at CBS Television City in Los Angeles on Monday. The three finalists, Chris Rene, Josh Krajcik, and Melanie Amaro, joined judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid for a photo op. Paula was carrying a rather cool and unique Pepsi can clutch. It looks to me that it’s worth more than a can of Pepsi.

Two Recent Editorial Assignments- Portraits on Location

Here's a recent tear sheet from a couple assignments I had with the Press Telegram in Long Beach last week. I've been shooting more editorial lately. It's good to have a mix of clients- corporate and entertainment events, head shots, advertising, and editorial.

I knew the portraits were going to run side by side so it was important to me have consistent lighting for both. Shooting on location with a Nikon D3/28-300 lens, I used a single Dynalite head with Photoflex softbox powered by a Dynalite XP1100 generator. There was probably a 1 to a 1 1/2 stop difference between the subject and the ambient light.

Sunday marked the 66th anniversary of V-J Day - the day the Japanese surrendered. I dropped by the El Dorado Community Center in Long Beach to photograph the Spirit of '45 party for the Long Beach Press Telegram. Many veterans attended the event, including Mr. Jack Williams shown in the bottom photo of this tear sheet. Mr. Williams was a glider pilot during the war.

One veteran American glider pilot painted a vivid picture of the stark terror they experienced. "Imagine", he said, "flying a motorless, fabric-covered CG-4A glider, violently bouncing and jerking on a 11/16 inch thick nylon rope 350 feet back of the C-47 tow plane. You see the nervous glider infantrymen behind you, some vomiting, many in prayer, as you hedge-hop along at tree-top level instinctively jumping up in your seat every time you hear bullets and flak tearing through the glider. You try not to think about the explosives aboard. It's like flying a stick of dynamite through the gates of Hell."

Two Major Daily A-1 Tear Sheets... Published The Same Day!

This is cool. In addition to photographing a combination of celebrity and corporate events here in Los Angeles, as well as onsite business headshots, I also take on a lot of editorial assignments. So it was fantastic to receive a couple A-1 tear sheets last month from two different newspapers- The Standard-Times, New Bedford, Massachusetts and The Long Beach Press-Telegram in CA. Amazingly, both photo assignments were published the same day on July 11! “Math skills add up” had been photographed in March. The LB Press-Telegram assignment, “Hope, faith come alive in songs” had been shot the previous weekend.

It started simply enough a few years ago when I began taking videos of random red carpet arrivals. I used a cheap Nikon Cool Pix attached to a mini-tripod. There was no real editing of the video. I would simply press the start and stop button when the celebrity entered and exited the viewfinder. The resulting videos are very raw. Most of the time all you hear are a bunch of screaming photographers competing with each other to get the people's attention.

I think to date 56 videos have been uploaded to the OverTheShoulder account on YouTube. I'm surprised by popularity of these videos. The quality is poor and they really aren't that entertaining. Nevertheless, the videos are averaging about 250-400 combined hits a day. Depending on the newscycle, some get as many as a 1000 hits a day. The video I posted with Jesse Johnson, Dakota Johnson, Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith and Tippi Hedren is approaching 50,000 total hits.

My personal favorite is with Jackie Chan. It's about 4 minutes long- nothing but total chaos in front of the camera.

I can't remember the last time I uploaded a video. I may start it up again. My cheap little Nikon died last year so I'll need to get new one.

Charlie Sheen has been nearly dominating the news cycle lately. A quick search of Google News shows he's right up there in popularity with the chaos in Libya and Apple's introduction of the iPad 2. Without a publicist to buffer his sound bites, he's like a police pursuit- it's hard to look away and ignore. His life has become reality television at its finest.

Two Portraits I Really Like

These portraits of A.K. Toney and Rochlin were taken one afternoon in 2008 at Ave 50. It's a great studio- drop by if you get a chance.

I photographed roughly a dozen poets on that day. Some I shot in color, while others were photographed in B&W, all film- Fuji and Ilford. I used my Mamiya 645 medium format with a standard lens.

I've been photographing Los Angeles poets for about 15 years now. About 100 of the 150 writers I've photographed so far can be seen on my site, Souls & Passions, The Poets of Los Angeles. I'm working on my first book of black and white portraits from this photo documentary. A book of my color portraits will subsequently be published.

David Hockney is probably my favorite contemporary artist. I love his use of color. In 2006, Hockney had a show "David Hockney Portraits" at LACMA. Here are a few shots from his opening, including Peter Goulds standing next to the painting, "Peter Goulds Standing"(2005). Isn't that a great title? It makes it so easy for captioning.

I really like this romantic wedding photo I took a few years. This photo was actually part of a series of engagement pictures I took in Los Angeles of the couple prior to their wedding day.

If I remember correctly, this wasn't her actual wedding dress. I know a lot of women who are looking at this photo are thinking, "Oh no... she's lying in the grass in her wedding dress. What is she thinking??" I'm pretty sure it was an inexpensive "second-hand" dress she picked up just for this photo session.

Kwaw, MD through my client, Practice Builders, when I photographed him for his original website in 2006. Since then, his medical practice has grown so he called me back to photograph his staff.

As their office sits on top of the 20th floor in a building near the John Wayne Airport, the law firm Crowell & Moring has a great view of Orange County. And although I've been taking their executive portraits for several years now, I always forget to take a photo or two of the scenery from the top. Today, I finally remembered...

A side note for the photographers who read this blog... I balance the indoor lighting with the outdoor- 1/60th, f/11, 200 iso, using two Dynalite heads powered at 250 each minus 1/3 -2/3 power depending on the distance of the subject.

Last night, I was at the Griddle Cafe's Red Velvet Pancake Mix Launch hosted by Eliza Dushku and expert chef and founder, Jodi, at Kitson in West Hollywood.

I didn't expect to see David Cook. The last time I saw him was at American Idol's finale a couple years ago. Here's the link for the latest news on David Cook.

As for Dushku, she joins Anna Ferris and Sigourney Weaver on the Ghostbusters 3(2012) "rumored" list. IMDB says the screenplay is still in the works. How can there possibly be a Ghostbusters sequel without Sigourney Weaver??
